Malaffi in collaboration with SNOMED International, has achieved the Middle East’s first large-scale implementation of international clinical coding standards. By integrating SNOMED CT and LOINC across more than 3,000 healthcare facilities and 90+ EMR systems, Malaffi has enabled true interoperability - allowing millions of health records to be securely and meaningfully shared.

This initiative, supported by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, enhances data quality, patient safety, and public health insights, and lays the foundation for AI-driven healthcare across the Emirate. Recognized by SNOMED International as a clinical interoperability centre of excellence, Malaffi continues to lead regional efforts in healthcare data standardization and digital transformation.

This report aims to cover our remarkable journey. In just three years since the launch on January 23rd, 2019, we have built, from the ground up, what is the region’s foremost Health Information Exchange (HIE) platform.

The platform connects all hospitals and and 99% of all patient episodes in Abu Dhabi and has been noted as one of the fastest HIE rollouts globally. With a goal to improve healthcare quality and patient outcomes, and a strategic initiative of the Department of Health-Abu Dhabi, Malaffi is a key to the digital transformation of healthcare in the Emirate.

KLAS Research, a company that provides impartial healthcare IT research, in late 2020 interviewed a group of Malaffi users and stakeholders to produce a report about their satisfaction with the platform.

According to the report, Malaffi’s stakeholders were universally satisfied with the system and reported seeing outcomes in terms of prevention of repetitive testing, higher quality and more accurate care, and easy access to patient data. Almost a quarter reported seeing immediate outcomes and over half have seen outcomes within just six months.
